Podcast: Sports Info Solutions' Mark Simon

Mark Simon is a super smart, friendly, engaging and approachable baseball stats expert. He currently works as a researcher and writer for Sports Info Solutions, a stats and analytics company that advises many MLB, NFL and NBA teams. Before joining SIS, Mark dug into the baseball numbers for ESPN Stats & Info for more than 15 years and often appeared on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight.

Mark is well known to Giants fans, as he often appears as a guest with Marty Lurie during the weekend pre-games shows on KNBR. And Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming weaves in stats Mark texts him during Giants games. Mark is regular presence at Society of Baseball Research (SABR) events and on MLB Network.

In today’s podcast, Mark and I talk about defensive metrics—statistics that measure how effectively and efficiently a player fields his position. Sports Info Solutions created the metric Defensive Runs Saved. Mark explains the detailed process SIS uses to calculate that stat and we talk about which players have accumulated the most DRS this season.
